yoga

Hello, this is where you shall find information from some of the courses which I run or classes I teach. The schools at which I teach are linked below:

I practise and teach in the Iyengar tradition.   From time to time I shall post a sequence which we did in class and for which students asked, as well as the odd note or snippet of inspiration.

The sequences for the first ten weeks of the beginners course are published below.   Hopefully you shall find the time during the week after class to practise these short sequences and use it as a foundation in your new pursuit of yoga.

Saturday 8 August: Contemplation from The Tree of Yoga by BKS Iyengar p. 49.

About listening to your own body:

The branches of the tree are the asanas.  What is the right attitude and approach to the performance of an asana?

You have to become completely and totally absorbed, with devotion, dedication and attention, while performing the pose.  There should be honesty in approach and honesty in preparation.   When performing a pose, you have to find out whether your body has accepted the challenge of the mind, or whether the mind has accepted the challenge of the body.  Are you working from the body to get the factual feeling of the pose, or are you doing the pose because you have read in books that it is going to give such and such an effect?  Are you caught in the web of what you have read, searching for the experience of somebody else’s written word, or are you working to know with a fresh mind what type of new light is cast on the pose by your own experience while performing it?.
